Sometimes you don’t need a big road trip across Europe. You just need an early alarm, a half tank of fuel and a couple of hours to yourself. Luckily, within striking distance of London, there are roads that turn an ordinary weekend into something a bit special.
Here are five worth your time.
1. The B4009 – Chiltern Hills
This one’s a gem. Rolling countryside, smooth bends, villages that make you want to stop for a pint. It’s not about hammering it, it’s about flow. Get it right and you’ll end up smiling at every corner.
2. The A272 – Petersfield to Winchester
A bit of a legend. Everyone talks about the A272 for good reason – it’s long, sweeping and perfectly set up for a steady rhythm. Don’t rush it. Let it unfold.

3. The B660 – Bedfordshire Backroads
Narrow, quick, hedges tight to your shoulders. This road feels alive. Best enjoyed in something light and nimble, where every input counts.
4. The A24 – Dorking to Horsham
Easy to overlook, but it’s better than people give it credit for. Early mornings, before the traffic wakes up, this stretch delivers more than you’d expect.
5. The B-roads around Henley and Marlow
Not one road, but a whole network. Up and down through the Chilterns, glimpses of the Thames, and plenty of stops for a coffee by the river. The perfect Sunday loop.

You don’t need to go far for a great drive. Just pick the right road and give yourself the time to enjoy it.
